The green woodpecker is a resident bird and does not migrate, staying in its habitat year-round. It prefers open, tree-rich landscapes and traditional orchards, where it is often seen searching for food on the ground. Measuring around 30 to 36 cm in length, it is one of the larger native woodpeckers. It breeds in tree cavities it excavates itself. Its main diet consists of ant larvae and pupae, while in winter it also feeds on other insects and fruits.
